1. CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the public Safety Commission was called to order at 6:37 p.m. by Commissioner Trerotola.
2. ROLL CALL
Commissioner Rodriguez, Commissioner Trerotola, and Commissioner Pacheco were present. Commissioner Nunes and Garcia were absent.
Management Analyst Adrian Fajardo and Deputy City Manager Melissa Burke were in attendance.
3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Commissioner Pacheco led the Pledge of Allegiance.
4. ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING PUBLIC COMMENTS
Management Analyst, Adrian Fajardo, read the announcement regarding Public Comments. There were no public comments.
5. OLD BUSINESS
5A. Election of Officers of the Public Safety Commission
Commissioners Trerotola and Rodriguez nominated Commissioner Nunes for Chairperson of the Public Safety Commission.
Commissioners Pacheco and Trerotola nominated Commissioner Rodriguez for Vice Chairperson.
Motion by Commissioner Trerotola to nominate Commissioner Nunes as Chairperson and Commissioner Rodriguez as Vice Chairperson of the Public Safety Commission. Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. The motion passes 3-0-0-0-2 with Commissioner Nunes and Commissioner Garcia absent.
5B. Approval of the Minutes – August 29, 2024, October 23, 2024, and March 3, 2025
There was no staff presentation or discussion from the Commission.
Motion by Commissioner Pacheco to Approve the Minutes of the August 29, 2024, October 23, 2024, and March 3, 2025 Public Safety Commission Meetings. Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. The motion passes 3-0-0-0-2 with Commissioner Nunes and Commissioner Garcia absent.
6. NEW BUSINESS
6A. Presentation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Regarding Public Safety Activities and Incidents throughout the City of Artesia
Sgt. Ramos provided an update on Public Safety updates on the 2024 Calendar Year.
Discussion was held.
Motion by Commissioner Pacheco to receive and file the Public Safety Update. Commissioner Trerotola seconded the motion. The motion passes 3-0-0-0-2 with Commissioner Nunes and Commissioner Garcia absent.
6B. Update on Automated License Plate Readers
Sgt. David Chi of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – Advanced Surveillance and Protection Unit provided an update on the Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. Sgt. Chi reported that all eleven (11) ALPR cameras are now fully operational. He also presented data regarding the system’s performance and effectiveness.
Sgt. Ramos shared a recent success story demonstrating how the ALPR system assisted in locating and apprehending a suspect.
Motion by Commissioner Pacheco to receive and file an update on the Automated License Plate Readers in Artesia. Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. The motion passes 3-0-0-0-2 with Commissioner Nunes and Commissioner Garcia absent.
7. STAFF UDPATES
Staff distributed new name tags to all Commissioners present.
Deputy City Manager Burke provided an overview of the upcoming budget process. She noted that, with the passage of the recent sales tax measure, the City is exploring ways to invest in public safety initiatives. These efforts include expanding the Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) network, launching the Youth Activities League Program, and evaluating the potential use of private security patrols.
